Port Solent introduces motorhome parking charges

A popular leisure destination used by some motorhomers as an overnight parking stop on the way to an early morning ferry has introduced parking charges for the first time.

Port Solent, which lies alongside the M27 close to the junction with the M275, taking you into Portsmouth, updated its parking policy this month. From now on, any motorhome or campervan which parks there overnight will have to pay a £10 overnight parking charge.

Port Solent says the new system, which is managed by an independent operator, is clearly explained on newly installed signage and will be enforced with the use of ANPR technology.

Motorhomes and campervans will be allowed to stay for a maximum of one night, and the parking charges can be paid for by using the RingGo app.

The company says the new system was installed following a noticeable increase in demand at the car park from motorhome and campervan owners hoping to get on a ferry to either France or Spain the following morning (if you’re thinking of doing so, see our tips on exploring Europe in a campervan. It says it wants to ensure fair and consistent use of facilities for all visitors.

Portsmouth already has a clean air zone. which some larger motorhomes may be forced to pay to enter, particularly if they are classed by the DVLA as a private heavy goods vehicle.
