Is your motorhome protected against hidden costs?

New claims data from motorhome warranty specialists, Warranty Solutions Group (WSG), has revealed how expensive motorhome repairs can be and the advantages of having a comprehensive warranty.

The single highest chassis-related claim paid by the company in the past year was £13,013 for a gearbox and heater exchange on a Fiat Ducato. In second place was a Peugeot Boxer, with a £5,089 combined claim for multiple heating system and habitation faults.

Other big-ticket claims included a £3,615 engine ECU replacement on a Mercedes-Benz and £2,604 for a faulty radio unit in a Volkswagen Transporter. Even seemingly minor issues like a rear-view camera or diesel injector regularly tipped the scale past £1,500 – while an air suspension pump on a Fiat Ducato cost £1,380.

These insights come from WSG’s latest analysis of motorhome warranty claims it settled between July 2024 and June 2025. The findings highlight that while modern motorhomes are more advanced, comfortable and packed with technology than ever before, that sophistication comes with a price.

Most common chassis claims

Power distribution box failures were the top issue, making up nearly 10% of all claims, with average repairs costing over £800. The main cause of failure in these components was damage to seals and exterior panels as a result of water ingress. In second and third places were faulty control panels and rear-view cameras that can rack up hundreds of pounds in repair bills.

Regular Practical Motorhome columnist Motorhome Matt Sims said: “Motorhomes aren’t just vehicles, they’re companions on life’s adventures. Many owners give them names, personalise every corner, and create years of memories on the road. That emotional bond runs deep, which is why protecting your motorhome isn’t just a financial decision – it’s a personal one.

“A well-structured warranty offers more than just peace of mind. It provides real support when you need it most. As your motorhome ages or you rack up the miles exploring the country, the risk of costly faults increases. Key components like NOx sensors or power distribution boxes can fail without warning, and repairs can be expensive and stressful, especially if you’re away from home.”

Motorhome chassis reliability

WSG’s research also reveals that Peugeot chassis models recorded the highest claim rate at 62.07%, followed by Mercedes-Benz at 46.15% and Fiat at 42.61%. Volkswagen proved more dependable, with a lower claim rate of 22.86%.

WSG’s Head of Motorhome Products, Dave Rogers says: “Looking after your motorhome goes beyond routine checks and keeping it clean. It means being prepared for the unexpected. A fully comprehensive warranty gives you the confidence to set off on your travels knowing that if something goes wrong, support is there when you need it most.

“While overall reliability across the sector is improving, driven by smarter manufacturing, technological innovation, and better aftersales support, problems can still arise. Award-winning dealerships like Todds Motorhomes and Peter Roberts Motorhomes, both of which achieved customer satisfaction scores above 94%, show the value of great dealer care. Likewise, manufacturers such as Adria, Roller Team, and Bürstner are setting new standards in build quality, according to the results of this year’s Owner Satisfaction Awards.

Reasons to consider a motorhome warranty:

  • Reduces risk of high repair costs
  • Cover for complex systems
  • Peace of mind
  • Protects electrics, comfort systems and habitation as well as engine
  • Keeps your vehicle in good shape and helps preserve resale value.

Motorhome Matt Approved WSG advises motorhome owners to invest in a comprehensive, specialist warranty that covers not only traditional mechanical failures but also electronic, comfort, and habitation-related systems.
