This Essex converter is now offering what could be the first ever Tesla “campervan”

An Essex converter that specialises in smaller conversions, including all-electric base vehicles, has produced what could be the first-ever Tesla “campervan”.

Such is the public curiosity about if or when a Tesla-based campervan will ever be produced, that the internet has been awash in recent months with fake news about a Tesla motorhome already being launched.

But Wheelhome, a campervan converter based near Brentwood in Essex, has produced such a vehicle, albeit a removable “roof camper” that can be detached from the back of Tesla 3, provided you have Tesla’s roof rack and tow bar fitted.

The Dashaway eRC is more than a traditional roof tent, however, as it contains not just seats, but can also include a microwave, oven, air fryer or grill, and comes with a sink with a drainer, a fresh water tank, a compressor fridge and an inverter with a lithium battery.

The new electric campervan does have some downsides, however. Once installed, you can only have two people travelling in the car, although the unit, which is 4.87m long and 1.8m high and weighs 150kg, can be completely removed when you no longer need it so you can revert to using the car as a five-seater.

Wheelhome proprietor Stephen Wheeler says earlier this summer he took a prototype of the Tesla vehicle on a 3,500 mile trip through Holland, Germany and Denmark and then via ferry to Iceland and back, and on the journey it achieved a range of around 245 miles. “We believe this is significantly more than any other two berth camper with similar facilities,” he said.

He expects the unit to cost around £23,400, including VAT. You would also obviously need to buy a Tesla 3, but Stephen says you should be able to get a two- or three-year old used model for between £20,000 and £24,000.

Another name in the industry to be sharing information about upcoming releases is Carthago. The German manufacturer has refreshed its chic c line range and is also bringing out new c2 tourers on Fiat bases for the 2026 season.
