Parking restrictions on motorhomes at one of the North East’s most popular seafronts are due to be introduced next month ahead of the peak summer season, a local council has announced.
Redcar & Cleveland Council says the restrictions on Marine Parade in Saltburn will come into force on 6 July as part of an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO).
From that date, motorhome and campervan parking will only be permitted in existing marked bays on the north side of Marine Parade, and even then, only for a maximum of four hours, with no return allowed within four hours of the initial period.
The restrictions will only apply, however, between 9am and 5pm Mondays to Saturdays. Outside of these hours and on Sundays, there will be no restrictions in the marked bays.
Motorhomes will be prohibited from parking in the remaining unmarked sections of both the north and south sides of Marine Parade – areas which will be identified by a single yellow line and associated signage.
The council says the new restrictions do not prohibit a complete ban on overnight parking, but will limit where motorhomes can park. It says the new restrictions are needed to balance the needs of local residents and motorhome users.
Councillor Carl Quartermain, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said, “We recognise that people hold strong views on this issue, and that is precisely why we are introducing the measures through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order. We will continue listening to residents, businesses and visitors throughout the trial period, carefully considering any comments, concerns and evidence before deciding on the long-term future of the scheme.”
While restrictions are being introduced at Saltburn, another council has approved seafront parking for motorhomes. This has come into effect in Largs, where North Ayrshire Council has approved a plan to turn a council car park into dedicated overnight parking spaces for up to 20 motorhomes and campervans.
It also comes at a time when Eryri National Park Authority could abandon the overnight parking restrictions it introduced recently. The restrictions were only introduced two months ago, but a report is set to go before the AGM this week.
