Can I use a domestic fridge in a campervan?

Having access to a fridge can be an important part of an enjoyable touring experience, whether it’s for perishable goods or to keep drinks chilled. However, a question you may have if you’re new to the world of touring is “can I use a domestic fridge in a campervan?”.

Here, I’m going to talk you through the main points you will want to consider if you’re unsure about using a dedicated motorhome fridge or a household model.

Fundamentally, there’s nothing stopping you from using a 240V domestic fridge in a campervan. However, it’s not ideal, for a few reasons.

Firstly, household fridges are made for level and stable flooring, where they can benefit from good ventilation and a steady 240V AC power supply – these are things you’re not always going to have in your ‘van, whether you’ve opted for a campervan or motorhome.

Something else to consider is the noise factor. A domestic fridge comes with frost-free systems and multi-zone cooling – both useful features, but they will also create more noise.

You’ll also want to consider getting a good night’s rest. If you’re going to be sleeping near the fridge, you will find the 12V absorption fridge will be a much better option as it’s quieter, so long as you have the space for it. Although even then, I once had to stick a plaster over the control panel’s light at 2am on my dedicated leisure vehicle fridge, as it was lighting the whole interior – not ideal if you’ve gone to the trouble of finding out what you can do to make a camper van bed more comfortable to get a good night’s sleep!

Another factor to think about is the durabliity. A domestic fridge is not going to be built for the movement and vibrations of a campervan, with many failing prematurely. This contrasts with a campervan-specific model, which is better suited to withstand travel.

Consider the ventilation element too. A domestic fridge will expel heat from both the rear and sides, which will not be efficient if it’s installed in a campervan.

Don’t forget the issue of size either. This will be particular issue for campervan owners, as they tend to be smaller than a motorhome, and so would be less likely to have the space required to house a domestic fridge. Something worth pointing out is that smaller ‘van owners will most likely want to opt for a compressor fridge – should you find you’re lacking enough space in your leisure vehicle’s fridge, you can also consider getting the best cool box for a campervan to give you more space too.

As a final point, it’s worth considering that the warranty could be void if a household fridge is used. This is because the majority of manufacturers do not cover mobile applications, so a 12V fridge becomes both the more sensible and more reliable option.

Something else you may want to consider before setting off on tour is “do campervans need electric hook-up?” – it can make a difference to the experience you have on the road.
